Shutter Speed is the measurement of how long the lens is left open for whilst filming/photographing. It measures how long the film or digital sensor inside the camera is exposed to light.
Shutter speed is measured fractions of seconds. Like in my own examples I have shot 1/30, 1/50, 1/100 and 1/160.
Shutter Speed also effects the blur in images though. A shorter shutter speed (for example 1/160) will be more crisp with less motion blur as the camera is capturing the moving at a much quicker rate.
