The ISO setting on the camera is the sensitivity of the sensor. The lower the number the less sensitive your camera is to light and the darker the image and finer the grain. It defines how exposed an image will be by changing the sensitivity.
Therefore in low-key lighting a higher ISO can help but it can effect the quality of film.
